This nice composition was created by Fedoskino artist V. Rekun. It shows three peasants returning home from a fair. They sit in the cart pulling by three horses. The horses move slow, the peasants talk, discussing the results of their trade in the fair.
The scene is painted against the delicate yellow background. The horses are very well drawn. Each one has been given its own personality. The characters are naturally drawn; their gestures, friendly embraces, pleased faces convey the free and easy atmosphere of a friendly chat.
The scene is painted on an oval located slightly above the edges of the lid. The elegant gold filigree design frames the scene, while the beautiful gold floral ornaments decorate the corners of the lid. The sides of the box are adorned with an intricate gold pattern.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1995).
