Description: Fedoskino artist Kozlova created this beautiful piece of art. The box depicts the Russian fairy-tale character, the Snow Maiden or Snegurochka, in the winter landscape. This subject is very popular among Fedoskino artists; it was initially painted by the famous painter M. Pashinin. You can see the same scene in the book by N. Malakhov, Fedoskino (Moscow, Fine arts), in the image 97.
The Snow Maiden is depicted with a serene smile on her face, she is happy in her wintry wonderland. Her face is quite pretty, and nicely drawn. The artist carefully draws an intricate brocade pattern on her coat, and even creates a suggestion of embroidery on her gloves. The trees in the background are well painted, and the frosty snow covering them has an authentic appeal of being cold and white. The colors are cool and relaxing to look at, giving the scene a peaceful quality. The scene is painted over a thin layer of aluminum powder, which enlightens the composition with a magic glow.
The sides of the box are decorated with the elegant gold pattern, imitating snowflakes and whimsical swirls. The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior. The box has a hinge to its left and rests on a flat bottom. There is the Fedoskino stamp under the lid. Signed with the name of the artist, village and year (1995).
