This attractive, modest winter landscape was created by Fedoskino artist Staryh. It is a true miniature - its longest side measures less than two inches. Its small size doesn't detract from its beauty. The scene depicts a frozen, icy river and the surrounding landscape, including trees and the field covered with white snow. The entire scene is painted over a piece of mother-of-pearl, which shows through in many places and creates an interesting effect where the dominant colors change from a subdued moderate grey to a brighter grey with pinkish and greenish undertones depending on the lighting conditions. The artist uses the moderate cool palette of blue and white tones (white tones are mostly reproduced with the help of mother-or-pearl). The details are good throughout the landscape.
The portrait is painted on a small platform, whereas the black edges of the lid act like a frame. The sides of the box are decorated with a simple grey line painted in oil paints. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1998).
