Description: The atmosphere of sailing on the open sea is brought to life by Fedoskino artist L. Lappo. The composition is a copy of the famous picture "The Sunny Day" painted by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky in 1884. This picture is exhibited in the picture-gallery of Feodosia. I.K. Aivazovsky (1817-1900) went down in world culture history as romantic painter of seascapes and master of Russian classical landscape. He was born in the town of Feodosia in the family of broken Armenian trader. Till nowadays one can hear Feodosian legends about the boy who used to draw with samovar coal on the bleached walls of Armenian outskirts. With the assistance of Tavrida governor Kaznacheev Aivazovsky in 1831 joined to the Tavricheskaya high school, and in 1833 - the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint-Petersburg. He graduated from this Academy with the great golden medal and the prise - tour to the Crimea and Europe. There is the interesting fact that Aivazovsky, owing to his infallible memory didn't paint his pictures from life; he painted them from memory in his workshop, considering that "the movement of sea waves is difficult to catch with a brush".
The artist achieves some very good textures here. The water looks strikingly realistic. She does a nice job with the highlights and shadows on the ship situated in the foreground, adding an almost photographic realism to this work. The forms in the distance are naturally less detailed, creating a sense of depth and conveying the effect of humidity in the atmosphere. In the distance, there are some grey clouds near the horizon; perhaps there is a faraway rainstorm. A gorgeously detailed ship and vivid blue color gives this box a splendid appearance. A very pretty scene!
The edges of the lid are decorated with intricate gold patterns. The sides of the box are adorned with intricate and extremely beautiful designs painted in gold and blue paints. These designs resemble sea waves. The elegantly shaped box is made of papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2001).
