This beautiful box decorated with an early spring landscape was created by Fedoskino artist O. Likhacheva. The original of this composition was painted by the outstanding Fedoskino artist I. Strakhov in 1979, and you can see it in the book by N. Malakhov, Fedoskino (Moscow, Fine arts), image # 80.
The artist paints the background and the river with aluminum paint in the underlayers. This helps to convey the infinity of the snow-covered forest in the background, to create the depth of the sky and reproduce the glassy surface of the river. She creates intensely real depth by using the layer technique. Applying layer of paint upon another layer of paint, she gives the scene a three-dimensional feel. The color variance is amazing here. The white monotonous area of snowy fields contrasts beautifully with the golden sky and the bright blue-greenish river. There is a strict amount of talent that went into the creation of trees that have a profound, three-dimensional quality about them. The box is in excellent condition in spite of the fact that it was created in 1991.
The box is constructed out of heavy and dense paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer and the interior is painted with red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box sits flat. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1991).
