This charming small box was painted by Fedoskino artist S. Sytova. The composition shows a young woman, resting near a brook. She is very tired, after mowing grass in the field during a sultry noon. Cold water of the brook refreshes her, and shadows of trees save her from merciless, burning rays of the sun.
The composition is dominated by green and brown tones of the landscape, except for the woman, whose clothes are painted with red and white colors. The scene is painted over the coat of aluminum powder, which enhances the color of the brook and the grassy area, and creates an illusion of sunshine. The girl's face and her clothes are painted thoroughly, whereas the landscape looks strikingly natural.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior. The box has a hinge to its left and rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the name of the artist, village and year (1988).
