Description: This charming small box was painted by the talented young artist Natalya Torbina of Fedoskino. "Torbina" is the artist's maiden name; not long ago she married and changed her last name into "Orlova".
The composition shows a beautiful lady standing in front of the window. She has just come back from the theatre. Putting her opera glass, a fan and a splendid bunch of flowers on the small, round table, she reflects on the play that she has seen in the theatre or thinks about the gentleman who's presented her these wonderful roses.
Very fine brushstrokes help to bring this portrait to life. The lady's dress is textured with masterful color variations and thin, patient brushstrokes. Painted in pale pink and sky blue, the folds of the material are beautifully painted with depth and body. The fabulously drawn face shows deep, tender feelings.
Orlova's work is based in detail. This piece is no exception. The luxurious interior of the room is reproduced with a lot of details. Such elements as the yellow-brownish curtain covered with intricate patterns, the elegant round table with curved legs, the armchair adorned with tiny fringe, the parquet on the floor, incomparably beautiful white flowers in the big green vase, and a wonderful view of the winter landscape that can be seen through the window, enrich the composition and make it look realistic. By positioning the lady in front of the window, the scene is perfectly balanced and the eye is free to enjoy the excellent artistry of the piece.
The palette of the composition is amazing. It is based on skillfully matched pink, blue, white, and yellow-brownish tones.
The composition is framed with metallic silver line, accented with small hand-placed silver disks. The sides of the box are adorned with original, gold patterns, also accented with small hand-placed silver disks. The black exterior of the box is highlighted richly with bright crimson paint, adding subtle elegance to the piece, while the interior is traditionally red. The lid is hinged from the left side of the portrait, and the box sits flat. The artist has signed and dated the composition (2000).
An excellent piece! It show's the artist talent of a miniature painter. It's amazing that she has been able to find place for a large number of different objects on the small, limited surface of the box.
