This traditional Fedoskino box was painted by M. Pakhomova. The composition shows a lad and a girl standing at the well. The lad helps the girl to fill the buckets with water. The girl smiles and probably tells her friend some village news.
The palette is based on earthtones that help to reproduce a rural landscape. Green and brown tones of the landscape contrast beautifully with the bluish golden sky and with bright red, blue and green tones of the characters' clothes. Aluminum powder was used to enhance the color of the sky and the girl's sarafan. This decorative material adds glowing and natural light to the piece. The two characters are drawn very naturally and with a great amount of feeling. The surrounding landscape also look quiet realistic.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The composition is framed with a simple gold line; whereas the sides of the box are adorned with beautiful gold ornamentation. A hinge is fastened to the left of the composition. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the name of the artist, village and year (2000). A fine traditional work!
