Description:

This charming small box was painted by Fedoskino artist Tugarinov. The composition shows the facade of the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre. It was designed by the architects Bove and Mikhailov a hundred and seventy years ago. Its history is inexorably linked with the names of such singers as Fyodor Shaliapin, Leonid Sobinov, Antonina Nezhdanova and Grigory Pirogov. Its ballet is known world over. The theater's star dancers, among them Ekaterina Geltser, Galina Ulanova, Maya Plisetskaya, Vladimir Vasiliev and Rudolf Nuryev, helped build the theater's reputation and boosted their careers into the dazzling heights of international success.
The composition is painted in dark tones to convey the atmosphere of evening. Gold metallic leaf is inlayed in the portions of the building and the fountain that is located in front of it. Gold leaf creates the effect of electric lighting by means of which the building is illuminated, and also highlights the water of fountain, which reflects the theatre's illumination. Aluminum powder mixed with oils is used to create the depth of the sky and highlight the ground. Gold paint highlights the branches of the trees. Near the fountain we can see a loving couple that is dwarfed by the grandeur of the church.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1965).
