Description: This traditional Fedoskino box was painted by O. Naumova. The composition shows a scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale "The scarlet flower", written by S.T. Aksakov. This thrilling tale tells about the love of a beautiful girl and a horrible beast that afterwards will turn into a handsome prince.
Strolling through the wonderful garden of the bewitched kingdom the girl stops enchanted by the beautiful scarlet flower. In the background the incomparably beautiful palace raises above the fantastic trees and plants.
The artist's rendering of the flower is quite impressive with gold leaf shining radiantly around and through the translucent red paint of the flower. The girl herself stands out amid the generally darker surroundings. Her dress is illuminated with a metal inlay. The architecture in the background has a distinctive Russian look to it. The variety of green vegetation highlighted with aluminum powder in the scene makes the box more magical and adds to it fairy tale atmosphere.
The composition is framed with gold scrollwork, while the sides of the box are decorated with beautiful gold patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1996).
