This traditional Fedoskino box was painted by Shcherbakova T. The composition shows a hussar (a military rank in tsars army) and a merchant sitting at the table in the pub. The merchant drinks wine and hugs his friend hussar who plays guitar and sings a song. A beautiful girl dressed in peasant costume carries them one more bottle of wine. The friend will drink wine, sing sons and have fun the whole night long!
The composition is mostly painted in brown tones and the exception is the characters painted in bright red, green, orange, and blue tones. Pieces of gold metal leaf inlaid within the clothes of the characters make the box look festive and bright. This small composition is complex in its structure. Besides the skillfully painted characters, we can find here different furniture, plates and dishes, and some food. The depth of the composition is achieved by painting an arch inside the wall.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box isn't hinged and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1999).
