Description: Belovodov D.S. from the village of Fedoskino painted this typical Russian church in the realistic style. The geometric perfection is truly the highlight of the piece. The curvature of the roofs. The hollowed appearance of the bell tower. The realistic shadows which creep across the grounds. All expertly detailed. The artist also makes excellent use of his chosen palette. Sandy brown and pale green tones of the church and the surrounding scenery combine wonderfully with the pewter gray and blue of the overcast sky. The artist uses golden foil in order to produce the sun's reflective glare on the cupolas, and gold paint to create a sprinkling of gold highlights on the roof. The palette is quite simple, but the rendering of the painting makes the usage so complex.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in the village of Fedoskino. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer to paint the interior. A gold and white tartan pattern can be found on all four exterior side panels of the box. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1998).
