This box from 2002 features Emelya catching the magic fish from the tale of "By the Pike's Will". The fish begs for him to let him go and says that he will grant the lad any number of wishes. Kind hearted that he is, Emelya does let him go.
The box glows with color from the luminescent oil paints and aluminum powder. The effect is particularly dramatic because of the black background. Fedoskino artist V. Troitsky paints the scene in keeping with time-honored Fedoskino traditions and brings much feeling into the piece. The box is a good size, not small by any means.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made. The sides of the box are decorated with elegant gold ornamentation. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while bright red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The interior also includes the Fedoskino "troika" insignia stamped in orange paint on the roof of the lid. A hinge has been fastened to the left of the composition to be used for ease of opening. The box sits flat. It is signed with the artist's name, village, and year (2002).
