This typical Russian landscape was painted by O. Smirnova from the village of Fedoskino. In the foreground we can see the birch tree standing on the riverbank and the path that leads to the small village. In the background there is the small church located on the hill, and endless green fields and meadows.
The artist makes fine use of the overlay method of application here. This procedure helps the artist to develop three dimensional features throughout. Green and blue tones dominate this scene. Green tones are used to paint the grass and the trees, whereas blue tones are used to paint the sky and the river.
The exterior of the box is covered with green oils of different shades that tone with the composition painted mostly in green tones. The box's interior is traditionally red. Beautiful gold ornamentation decorates the edges of the lid, and the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition. The box sits flat. It is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Fedoskino.
