Description: Boris Shavirin from the village of Fedoskino painted this magnificent box featuring a hunting scene. The hunter rides the mighty steed that races across the wide field covered with white snow, accompanied by two dogs. Judging by the hunter's rich costume we may suppose that he is the member of the tsar's hunting staff. It's known that in ancient Rus the tsar had his personal troop of hunters who delivered game for him.
The box is a gorgeous piece of Fedoskino realism. Shavirin could perfectly reproduce intensity of movement, capture animal nature of the steed and the dogs, and express the hunter's elated mood.
The landscape is painted in white tones suitable for depiction of a winter scene, whereas the steed and the hunter's figure are painted in brown and red tones. Mother-of-pearl is inlaid in the portion of the hunter's shirt to add additional vitality to the scene.
The oval scene is framed with very beautiful filigree patterns. The same patterns wrap around the box's sides. The edges of the lid are also decorated with original gold ornamentation.
Black lacquer covers the exterior of the box. For additional decoration the lid (except the area where the scene is depicted) and the box's sides are covered with gold metal blurry spots. The box's interior is traditionally red.
The elegantly shaped box is made out of pressed paper. It has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the artist's name.
