This peaceful winter landscape has been painted by Mikhail Nikitin from the village of Fedoskino. It features two solitary peasant huts located on the riverbank. The ground, the trees and the roofs of the huts are covered with deep white snow. Night is falling. The winter sunset paints the sky with a warm golden-pinkish glow. The snow and the river realistically reflect this beautiful glow. An inlay of mother-of-pearl is added to create the mirrored shine in the river's water. Aluminum powder strengths this visual effect. The artist did an excellent job with the depth within the scene.
The edges of the lid, and the box's sides are decorated with intricate gold ornamentation. The exterior of the box is light gray, while the interior is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition. The box rests on four legs. The work is signed by the artist at the bottom of the composition.
