Mikhail Papenov of Fedoskino painted this beautiful winter landscape. The fresh snow blankets the ground and although the wind is still, you can feel the cold bite of the evening on your skin. Mother-of-pearl creates the brilliance of the sunset. Blue-lilac colored paints that easily represent a soft evening dominate the palette. Several cathedrals painted in the background create the depth of the composition. The landscape is painted to look very authentic and there is a good sense of the rural atmosphere that the people living here must feel.
The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with an original aluminum ornamentation. The exterior of the box is covered with tiny blue-lilac and light gray blurry spots; it has been done to imitate the coloring of a gray marble. The interior of the box is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. The box is hinged from the top of the scene, and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed, dated (2004) and titled ("Winter Day") by the artist on the box's exterior bottom in bright aluminum paints.
