Description: This box is a specimen of traditional Fedoskino artistry. It features the lad playing the accordion and amusing two pretty girls. In old times the lad who could play the accordion was the most popular young man in the Russian village. Girls dreamt to have a date with him, lads respected him. Singing and dancing to the accompaniment of accordion was the only available amusement then. The scenes like this one, depicting peasants and craftsmen, their daily life, feasts, and traditions were very popular during the Vishnyakov and Lukutin era.
The artist has used the black lacquered background for depiction of this night scene. Aluminum powder enhances the colors and creates a light source in the windows.
Elegant gold leafy ornamentation frames the scene and wraps around the box's sides. This work has an antique value as it was painted in 1996. Although it was painted ten years ago it is in perfect condition!
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene and the box sits flat. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid.
