Description: This oval box was painted by V. Smirnova from the village of Fedoskino. It features the Snowmaiden walking though the winter forest and speaking with birds. The bird that sits on her hand is called "titmouse". Snegurochka is the granddaughter of Ded Moroz( Russians call Santa "Ded Moroz'). Every year Snegurochka and her grandfather come from the faraway North Pole to wish Happy New Year to little children and their parents.
The scene is mostly painted in white and blue tones as the action takes place in winter. Her blue fur coat and hat are painted over aluminum powder, and detailed with gold paint.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed by the artist.
