N. Kosheleva is fond of cats, and likes to depict these graceful animals on her boxes. Here she has painted a charming kitten hunting after a butterfly. The palette is chosen to give the kitten a touch of realism. The brushwork is very intricate and even allows a viewer to see the kitten's fur as if it were really furry, and makes the butterfly almost weightless as it would be in the wilderness.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The work is signed with the artist's name.
