Description: Alimpiada Dokuchaeva is the author of this elegant box. It shows the portrait of the Grand Princess, Yelena Pavlovna. This masterpiece was originally drawn by the famous Russian painter, Vladimir Borovikovsky, in 1796, and can be currently seen in the Gatchina Palace-Museum.
The Grand Princess, Yelena Pavlovna (1784-1803) was a daughter of the Emperor of Russia, Paul I, and a sister of Alexander I. As a girl, Yelena was educated privately at home, her first years' education being supervised by her paternal grandmother, the Catherine II of Russia. As any other royal of her time, the Grand Princess's education was focused mainly on art, literature and music. In the late 1790s Yelena was betrothed to Hereditary Prince Friedrich Ludwig of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1778-1819). Died in Schwerin in 1803, and was buried there.
The portrait is painted very close to the original but the difference is that in the original Princess Yelena wears the brooch with a portrait of Catherine II inside. The portrait is framed with a thin gold line; two parallel gold lines wrap around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the portrait, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
