Description: Alexey Valyalin of Fedoskino is the artist who painted this magnificent ship. Powered by the tradewinds that flow above the surface of the water this boat looks as if it was built in the 18th century. During this time of oceanic exploration these ships and their men would go into the unknown hoping to find riches and treasures in far off lands. Navigational skills at this time were advanced to the point where a knowledgeable and daring captain could circumnavigate the globe with the help of the stars in the sky.
Oil-based paint is the primary medium used to paint the composition on this box. The palette used is full of blue and gray paints to convey the marine environment within the composition. Great movement in the water is painted very naturally showing the seemingly random wave directions and the whitewater being blown off the crests of the waves. The ship is detailed wonderfully showing the texture in the sails, the multitude of ropes, and the shadows created by the sun's position.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The exterior of the box is decorated with a random pattern of blue paints that were created by dipping the box into a mixture that formed a dye resist. Aluminum punchouts also decorate the exterior of the box. The box has a hinge located to the top of the composition that allows the box to open and reveal a red lacquer interior. Upon completing the work for this piece Valyalin writes Fedoskino and his name at the bottom of the composition.
