This box painted by Natalya Lavrenkova from the village of Fedoskino shows a scene from “The Nutcracker”, a Christmas fairy-tale written by E.T.A Hoffman. At night after the Christmas party is over and Marie lay asleep. An army of ruthless mice at the head of Mouse King overcome her bedroom. Marie does not realize that she is in a fantasy dream world.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. Gold line is used to frame the scene, whereas the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, and the title (“Marie and the Mouse King”).
