Description:

This beautiful box was painted by talented Mikhail Tugarinov from the village of Fedoskino. Mikhail Tugarinov was born in 1965 in the town of Dmitrov, located in the Moscow region. Mikhail graduated from the Fedoskino Art School in 1971 where he studied under the tutelage of such Fedoskino masters as V.D.Antonov and S.Chizhov.
This box shows one of the Cathedrals of the Suzdal architectural ensemble. The work is tasteful in its simplicity, and elegant in its originality! In the centre of the composition we can see the blue domed Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary that is the center of Suzdal architectural ensemble. This cathedral was built from 1222-1225 on the place on the collapsed cathedral. To the right of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary we can see the Hierarchal Chambers and the octahedral pillar of Bell Tower.
The artist makes supreme usage of the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture. The composition is dream like! The geometric perfection is truly the highlight of the piece. The curvature of the roofs. The hollowed appearance of the bell tower. The realistic shadows which creep across the grounds. All expertly detailed.
The composition is painted in blue and white-yellowish tones. The artist used fragmented golden foil in order to produce the sun's reflective glare on the windows and the roofs. A large inlay of mother-of-pearl focuses the viewer's attention on the cathedral and beautifully decorates the box!
The scene is framed with a gold line. The sides of the box are adorned with gold patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer to paint the interior. The box has a hinge above the scene and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist name, name of the composition-"Suzdal" and dated (2009) by the artist.
