The master of Fedoskino portraiture, Galina Dubovikova, is the artist who painted this impressive biblical scene. Getting inspiration from Rembrandt's art heritage, the artist has created this work. The depicted scene was originally created by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn during 1666-69. Called "The Return of the Prodigal Son", this masterpiece is currently exhibited in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn, Dutch baroque artist, painted The Return of the Prodigal Son shortly before his death in 1669. The subject comes from the Gospel According to Luke, Chapter 15. The artist had already turned to the theme several times in his graphic works, but in the Hermitage painting, created not long before his death, the painter endowed it with the sense of great tragedy elevated to a symbol of universal significance.
Gaze upon this painting and you will appreciate a sense of great tragedy. The contrast between the light and the dark, the two mysterious figures that appear dimly in the background, the woman behind the father, the stoic appearance of the old man who stands on the side, and the dishevelment of the younger brother, all contribute to this sense of tragedy. Complex emotions are expressed in the figure of the bent old man and his suffering, kneeling son: repentance and charity, boundless love and regret at the belated spiritual awakening. These images represent the summit of Rembrandt's psychological mastery.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The scene is framed with a gold line while the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name.
