Description: This genre scene was created by Smirnova from the village of Fedoskino. The composition shows a handsome water carrier standing near the water cart, and a young beautiful woman carrying a yoke. The lad fills the big barrel of his water cart with water, and looks back at the woman, moving away from the riverbank. May be at this moment he is paying a compliment to her. The scene has a very warm atmosphere with the spirit and beauty of the Russian countryside.
The brown and green tones predominate here. Aluminum powder is used to paint the characters' costumes, the water, and also to tint the trees painted in the background.
The scene is framed with elegant gold patterns, while the sides of the box are adorned with more complex gold filigree designs. The box is made out of high-quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box sits on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the name of the artist and the village of Fedoskino.
