Alexander Ivanov is the artist who has painted this sentimental scene. The older sister soothes her little sister who has broken a toy. The artist has managed to express vividly the emotions of the girls and reproduce a romantic atmosphere of the bygone century.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The scene is framed with a gold line while the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom.
