Talented Fedoskino artist Yevgeniy Shishkin has painted this beautiful winter landscape scene. He managed to express his admiration aroused while contemplating a rare moment in nature. The bright sunset sun that still keeps the warmth of summer glows with the light of the great fire whereas the ground is covered with the snow suddenly fallen in the middle of autumn.
White color is used to paint smoke coming out of chimneys.
The palette is filled with tones that suit to reproduce this sudden change of seasons. The sunset and its reflection on the mirror like surface of the river are painted in gold paints while the snowy ground and trees are drawn in blues and grays. The sunset glow is also reflected on some snowy areas; and here the artist shows his talent as brilliant color mixer, alternating continuously contrast orange and dark blue tones. The effect is stunning! The transition of colors is invisible, and that is why the scene looks realistic. Aluminum powder highlights the sky and the snow, while gold paint also can be found on the trunks of trees.
The scene is framed with a gold line. Two parallel gold lines wrap around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes its interior. It has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests flat. Signed and dated (2013) by the artist in black oils at the bottom of the composition.
