Description:

This beautiful architectural scene was painted by Samoilova Svetlana.
Here we can see the famous Novodevichy Convent (New Maidens) located in the center of Moscow. Clearly visible from Sparrow Hills (Vorob'evy Gory) the Novodevichy Convent was founded in 1524, though most of its present appearance dates from the 17th century. It was here that Boris Godunov was elected tsar, and Peter the Great's power-hungry sister Sophia was imprisoned here as well. The six-tiered ornately-decorated belfry rises 236 feet. Today Bulgakov is buried in the cemetery attached to the monastery.
The palette that the artist has used reflects the season depicted here. Predominance is given to gray, blue and white tones. Gold paint is used to create the brilliance of the domes. There is much depth and perspective in this work.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is covered with black lacquer. The interior of the box is traditionally red.
The edges of the box are decorated with golden dot ornament. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the title Novodevichy Convent.
