Description: This peace of art was painted by Yu. Nuzhnova from the village of Fedoskino. The composition depicts a scene from the adventurous tale "Chipolino" written by Italian writer Janny Rodary. This theme lacquer miniaturists use very rarely in their works. This tale tells about adventures of the onion-boy, Chipolino. He lives in the poor family, and his friends, also vegetables and fruits: turnips, pumpkins, garden radishes, etc., are also poor. Chipolino, his relatives and friends are depressed by rich vegetables: lieges, counts, countesses, dukes and duchess. They put them into prisons, take away their houses and property. Chipolino always tries to help their friends, and fights for justice. In the end of the story justice triumph over all evil: the wicked rich vegetables are punished, whereas all poor vegetables are released from the prisons. In the composition the artist depicts the moment of the story when Duke Orange protected by his guards, lemons, tries to take away the house of poor old Onion.
The composition is mostly painted in yellow, blue and green tones that match together beautifully. To bring the main focus on the Duke Orange the artist inlays mother-of-pearl into his costume. The detailing of each character is breathtaking. Each facial expression appears genuine and captured as it happened. The surrounding, fantastic scenery is also very well drawn.
The scene, the edges of the lid and base are decorated with thick gold band. The exterior of the box is firstly covered with aluminum paint, and then covered with bright blue paint (over the aluminum), this creates beautiful source of light from within. Moreover the corners of the lid and the box sides are decorated with whimsical patterns in the form of golden lines that build different figures. On the base of the box you can find another composition depicted in the right bottom corner. It shows poor vegetables who shake their feasts at rich vegetables. The rest space is left blue, on which there are bubbles or drops are added for decoration. The interior of the box is traditionally red.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The box has a hinge above the composition and sits flat. The artist has written her name, the title, and the year of 2004 at the bottom of the composition.
