Description: This splendid box is the creation of Providokhin from the village of Fedoskino. It features the portrait of general Alexey Ermolov (1777-1861). Alexey Ermolov is a legendary person who was appointed commander-in-chief in Georgia during the reign of Nikolay I. He had been ruling over Caucasia for eleven years. At that time Russia waged war against tribes of mountain-dwellers of Caucasia, including the Chechens. Ermolov became famous not only as the brilliant commander who carried out successful military operations in Chechnya and Dagestan but also as the outstanding governor of this region. He built the new fortresses, and did much for the development of trade and industry in Caucasia. Owing to Ermolov, the Caucasian tribes became reconciled with the presence of Russian armed forces in Caucasia.
The box elegantly shaped and beautifully decorated. It is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
Note: This box has been made in the Art Workshop of Sergey Tyurin.
