Description:

Oleg Yastrebov from the village of Fedoskino painted this composition. The grace of his lines and the animated style in which he paints has made his work very popular internationally. His choice to work with a variety of thematic material shows his diverse skill as an artist and that he is willing to experiment with stories that are not directly connected to Russian culture.
The box features the little elf-girl riding the turtle. The girl sings the songs about dinosaurs that lived on our planet thousands of centuries ago. The turtle listens to the girl attentively and thinks that dinosaurs are her ancestors.
The scene is painted in different shades of gray against the black background. Gold powder is used to highlight almost every element of the composition especially the girl's dress, the moon, the grass and the spots painted in the background. Aluminum powder is used to highlight the grass and the moon. Multicolored spangles are sprayed throughout the scene for additional decoration.
The scene is framed with a gold band on which the artist painted tiny black patterns. The similar ornamentation can be found on the bottom rim that wraps around the base of the box. The black sides of the box are covered with sprayed gold dust that composes original ornamentation that resembles the stone surface. The black exterior bottom of the box is covered with sprayed aluminum dust.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed, titled and dated (2005) by the artist.
