Description:

This elegantly shaped box featuring the romantic scene has been created by Tamara Edukova from the village of Fedoskino. It's early autumn. Peasants have already gathered hay. The grass is still green, but the trees are covered with bright red, orange and yellow leaves. The loving couple strolls through the grove admiring the beautiful landscape. The lad looks tenderly at his girl-friend, and presents her a twig of mountain ash.
The palette is based on beautiful combinations of contrast orange and blue tones. Gold metal leaf together with gold paints are used to create brilliance of the maple leaves. Gold metal leaf is also used to produce radiance of the haystacks. Mother-of-pearl intensifies brightness of the sunset in the blue sky creating beautiful gradations of tones. Using mother-of-pearl the artist also achieves luxurious texture of the girl's skirt. Gold paint is used to detail the costumes of the characters and the blue flowers depicted in the foreground. The picturesque landscape is painted over a thin layer of gold metal powder that helps to intensify the colors.
The artist makes fine use of the overlay method of application. At first she paints the landscape, and then covers this painting with translucent lacquer; afterwards she paints the figures of the characters, and again applies a layer of translucent lacquer; the last step is to detail the landscape, the characters, as well as to paint the wreath on the girl's head and the twig of mountain ash in the lad's hands. This procedure helps the artist to develop texture and three dimensional features throughout. A magnificent effect!
The box is richly decorated. The exterior of the box is covered with brown oils mixed with orange, copper and blue spangles while its interior is traditionally red. The sides of the box are elegantly decorated with copper threads, and the front side is additionally adorned with small beads.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache made in the village of Fedoskino. A hinge is fastened to the top of the lid. The box rests flat without feet. It is signed, dated (2005), and titled ("Mountain Ash") by the artist.
