Description:

This is another work of the talented and very creative artist from the village of Fedoskino, Sergey Knyazev. His boxes are always so beautiful that they can be compared with gems. Bright, ornamental and expressively painted, they may adorn any collection!
The box features the shepherd playing his flute and his girlfriend standing nearby and hearing his fascinating tune. They are standing in the birch grove, and behind there is the monastery with its majestic cathedrals.
The palette is composed of blue and violet tones. Working on the work the artist has used a great amount of supplementary mediums like mother-of-pearl, gold paint, gold and aluminum powder. A piece of mother-of-pearl is inlaid into the portion of the sky to create brightness of the sunrays; and another piece of mother-of-pearl is inlaid into the portion of the girls's sarafan, shirt and blue ribbon (this piece of mother-of-pearl extends beyond the boundaries of the composition and hangs down the edge of the lid). The sky is pained over aluminum powder, it creates the source of natural light shinning from within. Gold powder is applied to highlight some areas of the grass. Gold paint is used to detail the foliage, the plants painted in the foreground and the costumes of the characters. Here the artist makes supreme usage of the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture. The composition is dream-like.
The scene is framed with multiple of gold threads that form a single gold line decorated with forest plants, flowers, grass and foliage. The bottom edge of the box is also decorated with original gold ornamentation.
The exterior of the box is covered with blue paint mixed with gold dust. The exterior bottom of the box is additionally decorated with red spangles and blurry light gray spots. The interior of the box is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed, dated (2006) and titled ("Sunset") by the artist on the interior of the lid.
