Description: This detailed composition was painted by Fedoskino artist Frolov. It is an interpretation of a canvas-on-oil painting called "Alyonushka". Painted in 1881 by Viktor Vasnetsov, it currently hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery. During all his life this artist was inspired by Russian folklore, especially by Russian fairy-tales and legends, and this passion is reflected in his works. This scene isn't exception as Alyonushka is the heroine of many Russian fairy-tales, for instance of the popular tale "Alyonushka and her brother Ivanushka". Among his other works we may call "Three Bogatyrs" (1898), "The Frog Tsarevna" (1918), "The Tale of the Sleeping Beauty" (1900-26), and "The Unsmiling Tsarevna" (1916-26)
Victor Vasnetsov (1848-1926) made his artistic debut in the late 1870s and early 1880s. His pictures raised interest in Russian folklore by creating images from folk tales and heroic legends. Historic events and characters appear in Vasnetsov's works as they were preserved in the memory of the people. Vasnetsov's artistic quest coincided by and large with the aspirations of young Moscow artists who sought to revive folk forms in art and revitalize the Russian folk crafts (the Abramtsevo Art Circle). It should be mentioned that "Alyonushka" was also painted by Vasnetsov in the village of Abramtsevo.
The composition is framed with elegant gold and aluminum ornamentation. The same ornamentation decorates the upper part of the lid, and the box's bottom part. Original, round shape gold and aluminum ornamentation can be found on the backside of the box.
The box is made out of high-quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. For additional ornamentation the box's exterior covered with black lacquer is sprayed with green paints, and this green area is dotted with tiny black veins. The lid is hinged, and the box sits on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the name of the artist, and the year of 1998, and the village of Fedoskino in gold paints at the bottom of the scene.
