Description: Oleg Shapkin is one of Fedoskino's most famous names. He is mentioned in almost every modern book written on Fedoskino, and he himself has written very informative articles on the subject. He graduated from St. Petersburg's Art Conservatory and before that had the privilege of being Gennady Larishev's student. He and his wife (who works with her maiden last name of Kareva) work in watercolor paintings, and their lacquer art.
Painting encompasses the entire pen case, except for the bottom. One side features the girl and the lad riding the swing; the opposite side features two girls speaking about something, one of them holds a butterfly net.
The palette is a combination of cool and earth tones in the characters and in the landscape. Shapkin puts a great concentration of detail into the costumes of the characters. There are layers upon layers of paint and lacquer that give the costumes a three dimensional appearance. The same technique has been applied while painting the golden foliage. Mother-of-pearl and gold are added to the composition for flair and to add detail. The mother-of-pearl is done so subtly that it blends with the composition as if it were part of the world within the scene.
The pen case is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior bottom, and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged, and the pen case sits flat. The work is signed and dated (2005) by the artist.
