Description: The unmistakable style of top Fedoskino artist Maria Wagner shines in this delightful work. Her boxes are always very easy to recognize. They have a unique flavor that opens a vault of collectable possibilities.
The box features the scene of tea drinking that is traditional for the Fedoskino lacquer miniature art. In the background we can see the priest and the merchant's wife drinking tea from the saucers, and eating pirogi (pies). In the middle of the table there is a big samovar. In the foreground we can see the lad showing the little boy how to play the wooden pipe, and two maidens dressed in Russian traditional costumes who seem to flirt with the lad. The composition also includes various birds: doves, hens, chicken; birches and the cathedral painted in the far background.
A wide range of bright oils has been used by the artist to create this work. The colors are strengthened by aluminum paint used as an underlayer.
The scene is framed with gold metal thread. The box's exterior covered with black lacquer is dotted with silver blurry spots. On the box's exterior bottom the artist has painted the full-length figures of the man and the lad. The box's interior is traditionally red. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Fedoskino.
