N. Yashenkova is the talented artist who created this marvelous work. It features the highway robbers, and their camp in the forest. In old times it was very dangerous to travel through the forest, as it was a risk to be robbed or even killed. Escaped convicts, debtors, adventurers organized bands, and robbed everyone who passed though their territory in the forest. They didn't want to work, and drank strong alcohol, but in their way of living was a romantic aspect: they had freedom and were independent from rich landlords or anyone else. In this work the artist managed to accentuate this romantic aspect. Her robbers have kind faces, they smile, laugh, listen to the music, and have fun playing with their dogs.
Painting extends on the whole surface of the box except its bottom. The scene is painted in bright blue, brown and red oils against the yellow-cream background that is very appealing to the eye. The costumes of robbers and the trunks of trees are highlighted with gold powder. Very interesting skillfully painted work!
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, the village of Fedoskino and the year of 2006.
