Description: This attractive box is a creation of Valentina Smolenskaya from the village of Fedoskino. Valentina paints her works in the unique style, creating brilliant and exclusive collections of lacquer boxes, plates and jewelry. She finds the subjects of her works in literature, history or in the world of her own fantasy. The literary works by Pushkin A.S., Dostoevsky F.M. and Tolstoy L.N. inspire her to create new boxes. Apart from lacquer miniature painting, she likes to create watercolors. This practice helps her to get new ideas and approaches in the field of lacquer miniature art. Valentina has participated in 25 group exhibitions and also had 5 personal exhibitions. Her works are popular in Russia and abroad.
The box depicts the allegorical depiction of Night as the artist imagines it. Smolenskaya compares her with the beautiful young girl with the crescent shining on her forehead. She rides her winged steed with the golden mane, and traverses the expanses of the dark sky studded with shimmering stars.
The artist uses the black background to reproduce the dark night sky. Gold paint creates brilliance of the steed's mane, the stars, the Night's crown, the crescent shining on her head, and some other minor elements. Aluminum paint details the Night's hair, and some other elements as the wings of the bird depicted from the right of the Night's face. Mother-of-pearl shines through the steed's body and wings as well as through the Night's face and cloak.
The composition is framed with a wide gold line, while the sides are decorated with tiny gold stars. The box's exterior is covered with black lacquer mixed with gold dust; its black lacquered interior is sprayed with blue paint mixed with silver and gold dust.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2004.
