Description: This superb work is a creation of the prominent Fedoskino master Sergey Kozlov. He is a living legend in the lacquer miniature world. His unique creations are displayed in every catalogue on the Russian lacquer art. Collectors from different countries dream to acquire his boxes.
In this work the artist united two of his favorite themes - landscape and architecture. Undoubtedly, he is an unsurpassed master in painting both of these themes. Brilliant painting technique helps him to show beauty of Russian winter when trees are rimed, and the white snow glistens on the sun. Precision in painting diminutive details aids him to express grace and grandeur of Russian medieval architecture.
While painting this scene, Kozlov used his favorite blue and gray tones. Mother-of-pearl shines through the sky, creates reflection of sunrays on the river, and places emphasis on the monastery. Silver paint reproduces sparkle of the snow, while gold paint details the architecture.
The box's decoration continues the winter theme. The scene is framed with the original gold pattern that consists of two parallel thin threads accompanied by snowflakes.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes its interior. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed and dated (2005) by the artist.
