Description:

This splendid box has been painted by the talented Fedoskino artist Andrey Vorontsov. It is an interpretation of the famous tempera-on-canvas painting created by genius Leonardo da Vinci in 1490-1491. This masterpiece called "Madonna and Child" or "The Litta Madonna" is a gem of the Hermitage collection. It came in the Hermitage in 1865 from the Milan collection of Duke Antonio Litta, and got its second name after his surname.
Leonardo da Vinci painted this work in Milan where he moved in 1482. It is one of works of art that opened a new period in art known as the High Renaissance. The beautiful woman feeding her child is a symbol of motherhood and motherly love that are the greatest of human values. The composition is simple and balanced; the figures of the Madonna and the Christ Child are modeled with the finest use of light and shade. Beyond the symmetrical windows lies an endless mountain landscape as a sign of the universe's harmony and vastness.
Gold metal leaf has been used to create an original ornamentation that wraps around the box's sides. It consists of a gold line interlaced on the corners.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box; the red lacquered interior has vaguely black corners. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene, and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name and the year of 2004.
