Description:

This large box is a creation of Oleg Shapkin who is one of Fedoskino's most famous names. He is mentioned in almost every modern book written on Fedoskino, and he himself has written very informative articles on the subject. He graduated from St. Petersburg's Art Conservatory and before that had the privilege of being Gennady Larishev's student. He and his wife (who works with her maiden last name of Kareva) work in the same room in their Fedoskino home, which is filled with art books, sketches, watercolor paintings, and their lacquer art The box depicts the coat-of-arms of Switzerland. In the center there is the state coat-of-arm of Switzerland; around it Shapkin painted the coat-of-arms of various regions and towns of Switzerland including Tessin, Glarus, Aargau, Uri, Thurgau, Neuenburg, Zurich, Jura, Obwalden, St. Moritsz and some others.
To paint this box Shapkin used bright oils, gold paint and mother-of-pearl inlay. Gold paint is mostly used to paint the sun and the rays that it emanates; gold paint can also be found detailing the coat-of-arms and the clothes of the queen and the guard painted at the bottom of the scene. Mother-of-pearl shines through some of the coat-of-arms.
The scene is framed with a gold line. Complex gold floral ornamentation wraps around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed by Oleg Shapkin.
