Description: This box that depicts a magnificent view of the St. Basil's Cathedral has been created by German Larishev, the son of the prominent Fedoskino lacquer miniature painter, Gennady Larishev.
The St. Basil's Cathedral situated on the Red Square is a symbol of Russia. It was built by order of Ivan the Terrible in 1561 to commemorate to the victory over Kazan and Astrakhan Khanate. The second name of this magnificent building is Pokrovsky Cathedral.
The artist uses bright browns, greens and blues to paint the cathedral, and deep blue and violet tones to paint the sky against which the building is drawn. The cathedral is painted over gold paint that beautifully shines through the oils and enhances the colors. Gold paint also creates brilliance of the square's pavement (just in front of the cathedral).
Two parallel gold lines are used to frame the scene, and to decorate the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the year of 2006.
