Description: Creative works of Marina Rogatova are always interesting and popular among lacquer miniature enthusiasts all over the world. She has a peculiar painting style, and very often uses inlays of mother-of-pearl, gold metal leaf and many decorative details to produce rare and unusual beauty. She is married to the prominent Fedoskino artist, Sergey Rogatov. Their artistic duet has done much to enrich the splendid world of Fedoskino lacquer miniature painting.
This bright box depicts ladies and gentlemen flirting with each other at the masked ball. Each of them has his own fancy dress costume, and a mask. They play the roles of playing cards; here we can see the King of Spades holding the hand of the Queen of Hearts, the Jester, the Queen of Diamonds and the King of Clubs.
To accentuate richness and festivity of the characters' costumes, Rogatova paints them over gold and silver metal powder, and over the mother-of-pearl inlay. The scene is painted against the white background, and framed with a wide gold line accompanied with various suits of playing cards.
The box's exterior is covered with bright red paint. On the lid and on the box's sides Rogatova has painted various playing cards (some of them are detailed with gold paint). The box's interior is covered with dark red lacquer.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the name of the artist on the lid's interior.
