Description:

The famous Fedoskino artist Alexey Chirkov is the creator of this stunning box. This artist is fond of owls, and he has already created a series of works dedicated to these enigmatic birds of prey. This is another work from this series.
Here Chirkov depicts the owl sitting on the tree and peering into the darkness. The bird is scanning the land, and none of forest rodents can escape from its sharp claws.
The artist has masterfully painted the bird. Painting with a very fine brush, and alternating various shades of brown and white oils, he reproduces the texture of its feathering quite realistically. A piece of mother-of-pearl that shimmers with bright blue-greenish, violet and gold-pinkish tones is set into the bottom part of the scene to create the mysterious atmosphere that reigns in the moonlit forest. Another piece of mother-of-pearl that shines with pale white-silvery tints is set into the full moon to reproduce its brilliance. Gold paint shines through the owl's feathering; both gold and silver paints are used to highlight the trunk of the tree the owl sits on; silver paint is also used to highlight the night sky.
The scene is framed with a wide gold band.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Fedoskino, and the title ("The Eye of Earth") on the box's exterior bottom.
