Description: With imagination and skill combined, the famous Fedoskino artist Vladislav Maslov has created this stunning box that exemplifies the idea of the hidden treasure. It does so with abundant detail and the ferocious beauty of the color combinations and mother-of-pearl inlay.
The box shows an episode from the fairy-tale "Ivan Tsarevich and the Firebird". Here we can see Ivan Tsarevich and Princess Elena flying on the magic carpet. Ivan Tsarevich holds the golden cage with the Firebird in it. He has successfully fulfilled all the tsar's errands, and now he is on his way to the native kingdom.
The black background has been chosen by the artist to create an impression that the depicted action happens at night. Myriads of gold and blue blurry spots scattered against the black background help to imitate faraway stars shining in the darkness. The technique of covering the black lacquered surface with gold and blue blurry spots has been used to decorate the entire surface of the box. Some areas of the box's exterior are also highlighted with gold metal dust. Gold and silver metal paints are used to create brilliance of the characters' costumes, the carpet, the cage and the fire-bird. Round pieces of mother-of-pearl are scattered against the scenes, and the box's sides for additional decoration. On the box's sides the artist continues to paint the night scene depicting a number of roofs, houses, villages and towns the main characters are flying past on the magic carpet.
The scene is framed with original design composed of a wavy gold line and gold metal dust. The same ornamentation can be found on the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the year of 2007 and the title on the square piece of mother-of-pearl glued to the lid's interior.
