Description: This interesting work has been made by the well-known and respectable Fedoskino artist V. Rogatov. It is called “The Birdfeeder”, and shows various birds that gathered in the birdfeeder to have a snack. Among the birds depicted here we can recognize (from left to right) the Bullfinch (the red breasted bird), the Crossbill, the Woodpecker, the Titmouse, and the Magpie (in the center of the lid). It is easy to see each of these birds in the Russian forest. At background the artist has painted the winter forest, and people who enjoy a frosty winter day in the forest; some of them look with admiration and interest at the birds pecking seeds inside the birdfeeder.
The semicircular shape of the box suits perfectly for reproduction of the chosen theme; the viewer has a splendid opportunity to look at the birdfeeder from all the box's sides. It is very comfortable to observe various species of birds while turning the box in the hand.
To paint the box the artist has used various tones of oils. Silver powder is used to create a shimmer of the snow while the bright pieces of mother-of-pearl shine through each of the depicted birds.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The box's exterior bottom is covered with black lacquer, while the interior is traditionally red. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title (“The Birdfeeder”), Fedoskino and the year of 2007 on the lid's interior in silver paint.
