Description:

This gorgeous box has been created by Eduard Makarov who has invented his own painting style within the limits of the Fedoskino miniature art.
The work is based on the Pushkin's poem “Ruslan and Luydmila”, and shows the episode when Ruslan battles with the Giant's Head.
Makarov prefers to make very multi-layered compositions to get a three-dimensional effect and create a dynamic experience for the eye, and this work is no exception. To paint it he has used a great amount of supplementary mediums like mother-of-pearl, colored metal powders, gold leaf, and ‘scan' (a special method of decoration produced by means tiny gold and aluminum shapes hand punched from gold and silver metal sheets and then painstakingly affixed by hand to the box).
Mother-of-pearl shell is set in the center of the box's top. Silver scan patterns decorate the helmet of the Giant Head; silver and gold scan patterns can be also found decorating some other parts of the box. In the center of the Giant Head's helmet a small pearl bead is glued. Small pearl beads can be also found in the center of the three-dimensional flowers made out of the epoxide resin.
The painting extends on the entire surface of the box except the box's exterior bottom covered with brown paint mixed in some areas with silver and gold powders. The red lacquered interior of the box is sprayed with gold and green metal powders. On the top of the box's interior a round mother-of-pear plate is glued together with two big pearl beads. On the box's interior bottom you can find the gold nail head.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is singed with the artist's name, the village of Fedoskino, the year of 2007, Russia and the title ("Bogatyr Ruslan and the Sleeping Giant Head") on the box's exterior bottom. A truly stunning work from Makarov.
