Description:

This box has been painted by the outstanding Fedoskino artist Alexey Otryaskin. It shows some moments from the Tale of Princess Frog. In the left bottom corner the artist has drawn Ivan Tsarevich who strolls in the dark forest looking for his beloved wife, Vasilisa the Wise. Vasilisa was a sorceress who may turn into various animals and birds. Ivan Tsarevich found her in the marsh when she looked like a frog, and was destined to marry her. When Vasilisa regained her human appearance, Ivan saw how beautiful his wife was and burnt her frog's skin. After that Vasilisa disappeared.
In the upper part of the composition we can see Koshchey the Deathless kidnapping Vasilisa the Wise. He flies in the sky, and carries the beauty to his somber palace depicted in the right upper corner.
In the far background, in the upper left corner of the composition we can see Baba-Yaga riding her mortar. Baba-Yaga said Ivan where Vasilisa the Wise is hidden, and also revealed the secret of Koshchey's death.
In the middle of the composition Otryaskin has painted the golden chest hanging on the old oak. Inside this chest the death of Koshchey is contained.
The composition is painted in dark blue oils as the action takes place at night. Mother-of-pearl shines through the full moon and through the figures of Ivan Tsarevich and Vasilisa the Wise. Silver powder mixed with blue oils creates brilliance of the sky. More radiance comes from gold metal leaf that decorates the costumes of the characters, and creates a magic luster of the chest.
The box's exterior is covered with dark blue lacquer mixed with silver dust, while its interior is traditionally red. The box's sides are decorated with a nice gold pattern.
The box is made out of paper-mache. It has a hinge to its left and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the title ("In the Kingdom of Koshchey the Deathless").
