Description:

This attractive box painted by the talented Fedoskino artist Yelena Aldoshkina shows Yaroslavna who is a character of the ancient Russian historical chronicle "The Lay of the Host of Igor".
"The Lay of the Host of Igor" or "Slovo o polku Igoreve", is the enigmatic masterpiece of medieval Russian literature. Written on the occasion of Prince Igor's unfortunate campaign against the Polovetsians in 1185, "The Lay of the Host of Igor" is unanimously acclaimed as the highest achievement in Russian literature of the Kievan era.
Yaroslavna is a symbol of a Russian woman's greatness. The box shows the moment when Yaroslavna weeps bitterly mourning brave Russian warriors and addresses to the sun: "Wonderful sun, you are warm and beautiful. Why do you burn young handsome warriors with your merciless rays? Why do you crook their bows with your arid thirst and oppress their hearts with unbearable anguish?"
The scene is painted in the beautiful blue and green palette. Mother-of-pearl shines magically through the river, through the sky and through the sun. Gold paint is used to decorate the costume of Yaroslavna, and also to highlight the tree painted from the right of her, and the cupolas of the cathedrals drawn in the background.
The scene is framed with a nice gold pattern; it consists of golden stars accented with silver paint reunited by a gold line; this pattern is accompanied by innumerable number of tiny gold dots. The same ornamentation decorates the sides of the box.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene and rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, the title, and the year of 2007 on the lid's interior.
